Many of us have dated or had relationships with men we met on match or know people who have.
But there are times when things go really awry.
One weekend I had a really frustrating experience with Match, and it wasn't because of a guy.
I look back on it now and find it amusing. At the time, however, it was frustrating to have someone basically pretending they were me for the entire weekend.
I realized something was wrong when I left my office and started walking to a nearby restaurant for happy hour.
Before I walked in, I checked my email on my iPhone and noticed that many were from guys on Match who were really angry. When you do The Rules, you don't get a lot of bad behavior. We all get some creeps, but overall, there's not a lot of craziness.
The emails were out of the ordinary.
One man sent this: "? where do you actually live ? neither are in Illinois that's for sure. and no pic and no info.....don't waste my time ok "lazybones."
Huh? where did that come from?
I was about to walk into the restaurant, so I shrugged it off. Then, while waiting for my friend, I checked my emails and got another from a guy saying: "Colorado Springs is a little far away."
That's when I looked more closely and noticed that I also got a message from Match, asking if I had just updated my profile. I hadn't.
I tried logging into my account with my password, but it didn't work. It had been changed.
By then I realized I had been hacked. But because it was late evening, I could not get through to anyone at Match. They would not be back until Monday!
I was able to use my iPhone to get into the account by changing the password that was created by the hacker. When I got in, I noticed that the person kept my user name, but removed my photo, saying she was widowed and was living in Colorado. I live on the East coast.
This is what my profile - after it was hacked - said:
I like to be outdoors, camping, sea, mountains and of course animals, especially dogs (especially big)! Of course reading, theatre and music! I like to meet new people, adore children,to hear their laugh and to see their smiles!
I'm a very active person; I don't like people lying on the sofa watching TV all the day round. But relaxation has nothing in common with lazybones.
At that point, I had to laugh. That explained the "lazybones" comment.
Then, I checked my sent messages and realized that this person sent a flurry of emails (I had to cringe because it's the antithesis to The Rules) to men, saying this:
How u doing?Pleasure meeting you.Am new on this site seeking for something serious, have heard of great love stories on this site & I'm giving it a shot hoping to meet that special one that we can both build a honest relationship together.Write me on bethwalls65/at/ya h()()/d()t/c()m so we can get to know each other much better cuz i don't come here often. bethwalls65 (AT) (YA H()()) (D()T) C()M
Note: I will reply back with more about me and more of my pictures.
I cringed some more. I would never say this, not in a million years!
Over the weekend, the account was disabled. Somehow Match's IT people must have figured out something was wrong with the account.
But since customer service was closed Friday night through Monday morning, I wasn't able to get control of my profile until Monday.
When I got a customer service rep Monday, I was told that someone hacked into my account. They suspected that the person wanted to access Match for free.
They gave me a credit for the few days I was off Match.
And, I finally got my profile back. Phew!
Meanwhile, I am still responding to guys from Colorado who this hacker emailed or favorited. They are wondering why I wanted a long distance relationship. The person who took over my account favorited 100 or so pretty decent looking guys in Colorado.
One guy said: "I like the idea of going out with a pretty blond. Any chance you're coming to Denver soon?"
We Rules girls know the answer to that question. :)
